NAMI Chicago Helpline
Lonely but
Not Alone
The NAMI Chicago Helpline (833-626-4244) is a free, confidential resource available to individuals, families, and professionals navigating mental health challenges. Specialists provide compassionate support and personalized referrals, connecting callers to treatment providers and community agencies based on their preferences, location, and insurance status. Available seven days a week, the helpline can be reached by call, text, or chat, and offers support in multiple languages.
Marketing for Change Co. approached us with a deeply relatable yet emotionally nuanced challenge: visualizing the experience of navigating mental health struggles while feeling out of place. From the start, we knew a hand-drawn aesthetic was the right choice, and one that would bring a sense of warmth and humanity to the story.
Our process began with character development, designing not only the protagonist but the world around her, including family members, a dinner table, and traditional Hispanic dishes that would ground the scene in cultural authenticity. From there, we focused on her facial expressions, ensuring they captured the quiet discomfort of the moment with subtlety and intention. In the color phase, we made deliberate choices to draw the viewer’s eye to her as the focal point, while giving the surrounding environment just enough life to evoke familiarity. Every frame of the final animation was handled with care, ensuring her body language and emotional state came through fully, all within a seven-second window.
The result was exactly what the story deserved: a brief but emotionally resonant animation that made a complex, often unspoken experience feel seen. By grounding the work in cultural authenticity and expressive character design, the piece had the ability to connect with audiences who have lived that exact moment and create understanding in those who haven’t. For the client, it was a meaningful extension of their mission, and for us, a rewarding reminder of how intentional design and a human touch can turn difficult emotions into something relatable, dignified, and lasting.
